XXXV–'45 - Guided Masses
A tunnel and a ribbon winding through it. An abandoned highway tunnel as a metaphor for one-way thinking; back then, in the years 1935–45, the masses were directed in a single direction, with little chance of deviating from the predetermined path. A funnel for channeling and accelerating movement, increasingly unsettling and threatening—yet this 360-meter-long tunnel offers no alternative exit.
A fabric ribbon marks the way, sometimes smooth, sometimes jagged, moving back and forth. This ribbon serves as the sole medium for films, texts, images, infographics, animations, and quotations. Some branches symbolize resistance, but they soon end at the rough, curved concrete wall.
A dedicated section is reserved for film, as this propaganda tool became, during that decade, a manipulative and creative instrument of dictatorships. In the end, however, visitors are not left in chaos, war, and a hail of bombs; instead, they are taken into the present—a reminder that peace is not something we own, but something borrowed. It is our responsibility to protect it.
