The era to be designed encompassed the past 500 years of history and the present of the Indian subcontinent. The goal was to encapsulate the country’s cultural reservoir in a scenic interpretation, supporting it thematically and spatially and arranging it comprehensibly across the 25 halls of Schallaburg. Display cases, lighting elements, and multimedia hardware had to be largely “recycled” from previous exhibitions.

Design
The vibrant color coding of the rooms distinguishes traditional India (colorful) from Europeanized India (khaki). Cartography serves as the framing guiding element of the information blocks, reflecting the European perspective on the country. Scenography, scents, sound, and film contributions accompany the exhibition tour as a continuous dramaturgical element.
