Project: Exhibition catalogue

In remembrance of the hundredth anniversary of the incorporation of South Tyrol and Trentino into the Italian State, ArtinTheAlps Association presented the “Bivacco” project to an international audience during the 58th Venice Biennale, based on an idea by the artist Hannes Egger.

A Bivouac, in italian “Bivacco”, is a small emergency high mountain shelter, always opento fulfil its vital function, guaranteeing access to all those seeking protection. The original bivouac wants to be an allegory of South Tyrol, the land of transit and exchange, as well as a place to welcome people and overcome borders. It represents a small Europe in these restless times, of rediscovering nationalisms, a Europe that is questioning itself about its future. This emergency accommodation was provided by the famous mountain climber Reinhold Messner.

The works of the artists Jacopo Candotti, Nicolò Degiorgis, Hannes Egger, Julia Frank, Simon Perathoner, Leander Schönweger and Maria Walcher, closely linked to the vision and concept of the transition place, had been shown in the bivouac. This works and the journey of the bivouac itself, were documented in a catalogue with texts by Roberto De Martin, Hannes Egger, Hannes Obermair, Maxi Obexer and Christiane Rekade as well as Patrizia Spadafora completing the artistic project. Using various binding techniques and papers, the catalogue conveys the multicultural character of bivouacs.
